Necessary Trouble: Growing Up at Midcentury by Drew Gilpin Faust
“A privileged white girl in conservative, segregated Virginia was expected to adopt a willful blindness to the inequities of race and the constraints of gender. For Drew Gilpin, the acceptance of both female subordination and racial hierarchy proved intolerable and galvanizing. Urged to become “well adjusted” and to fill the role of a poised young lady that her upbringing imposed, she found resistance was necessary for her survival.“

About Book Club #1
Book Club #1 meets once a month usually via Zoom (3rd Thursday of the month, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.). Once or twice a year, we meet in person at a member’s home. We typically alternate between fiction and non-fiction. We had our 140th book discussion in November. We select books every six months from books “nominated” by our members. Usually, the person who nominated the book will lead the discussion. Book Club #1 first met in 2012 and has always had both men and women members. We’ve added many new members over the years, but several of our current members were among the founding members of the group. New members are very welcome!
