Transportation FAQs
Our staff will make their best effort to find a volunteer driver for every member request for transportation within our service area and hours of operation.
- Transportation Hours: Rides from volunteer drivers will be available during standard business hours, which are Monday – Friday from 9 AM – 5 PM.
- Service Area: Rides will be provided to destinations in Newton and the Greater Boston area. The ease of fulfilling ride requests is typically commensurate with the destination's distance from Newton (i.e., the further the destination, the harder the ride will be to coordinate).
- Requesting Transportation: A minimum of five business days’ notice must be provided for all transportation requests. Members will be informed at least 24 hours in advance of the request if the request cannot be filled. The member will also have the option of having the staff continue to seek a volunteer.
NOTE:Rides will not be provided to members requesting transportation to an Emergency Room. Members should call 911 for emergencies.
- Logan Airport Policy: We only offer drop-off rides for departures from Logan Airport, and will not be able to pick members up at the airport upon their arrival. There is a fee associated with rides to Logan (see details below).
Costs: There are no costs to members for most rides. Please note the exceptions below (we request that the member pay the volunteer driver directly):
- Hospital trips: The members will pay any parking fees.
- Logan Airport: The member will pay the driver $10.00 if the driver has an EāZPass or $15.00 if they do not have an E-ZPass. This includes tolls and mileage.
- Accompanying Volunteers: If requested, volunteers may be available to accompany members on errands. Volunteers can also accompany members to the facility and/or lobby for medical appointments, but will not attend the appointments.
- Accompanying Members: It is okay for a member to request a ride that is for them and another person (such as a spouse or caregiver); however, this must be specified at the time that the transportation request is submitted so that we can check in advance whether available volunteer drivers can accommodate more than one passenger.
- Special Circumstances: It is rare that last-minute transportation requests can be arranged. If a request is made, the Member Services Coordinator will determine whether or not we will be able to accommodate.
